<p>The 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing was formed in June 1948 at Topeka AFB, KS (later Forbes AFB) with a variety of reconnaissance platforms assigned including the RB-29, RB-47 and more recently the RC-135. The unit moved to Ramey AFB, PR in November 1950 and Offutt AFB in August 1966 and assumed responsibility for 'Looking Glass' airborne command post relay. The unit gained the E-4 National Emergency Airborne Command Post (NEACP) when 1st ACCS moved from Andrews AFB in November 1975. The wing gained a number of VIP C-135A/B aircraft, with examples of the EC-135H, J and P transferred from USAFE, PACAF and TAC during 1991/1992 to centralize airborne command post operations under a single manager. RC-135s from the wing were among the first aircraft to land on Saudi soil after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1990. The unit became the 55th Wing in October 1991, and assumed responsibility for the handful of WC-135B and OC-135B 'Open Skies' monitoring aircraft in 1993.
